Shara Hughes
A monograph of painter Shara Hughes’s exuberant, sprawling, and colorful dreamscapes.
Flowers as tall as trees, glowing sunsets, waterfalls wreathed in mystery, mountain formations plunging endlessly into the depths—the paintings of Shara Hughes (b. 1981) play with inner landscapes. They seem to have sprung from a wild fever dream and attract the eye like a magnet.
Shara Hughes’s paintings form a journey with twists and turns through the jungle of an exuberant inner world. Her motifs are charged with manifold associations. Some works read as an homage to Georgia O’Keeffe, yet their expressive use of color is most heavily influenced by Fauvist visions of landscape and Expressionist art. Featuring key paintings of the past decade alongside new works, this catalog presents Hughes’s paintings, ceramics, and works on paper.
