This monograph on Olaf Holzapfel documents the last fifteen years of his work, with a focus on his use of natural materials and traditional craft techniques.
In his installations, sculptures, objects, and films, Olaf Holzapfel contemplates the conception and materiality of spaces. His sustained collaboration with artisans and adoption of traditional techniques that have shaped architecture and landscape for generations play an important role in his work.
This book focuses on his installations created using natural materials. Holzapfel transforms plant fibers into artifacts. To make his works, the artist resorts to reeds, hay, grass, straw, or wood and draws on elementary spatial techniques such as braiding, weaving, and timber frame construction. In doing so, he highlights the contemporary relevance of rural techniques, points to the ecological importance of renewable raw materials, and underscores their role in social and economic transformation. With an interview by Dieter Roelstraete and an essay by Sebastian Baden.
